Here’s a thought – where are all the women?

I’m a member of BNI,

BNI is a 24 year old business and professional organisation that allows only one person from each trade or profession to join a chapter. With over 5,576 active chapters, and 111,733 members, it is the most successful business referral organisation in the world.

Now, every few months we hold a Visitor’s Day to invite local businesses to come and see what we’re all about and see if there is anyone out there in the local area who would like to join our group and share in our success.

Today I was researching local businesses in my Power Team, that is to say the sort of businesses that I would naturally be able to refer business to as a writer and photographer and what struck me was – where are all the women?? On the trades pages of the Yellow Pages we see John Smith – Builder, Joe Bloggs – Tiler. Named blokes out there in the big wide world doing their thing. As for the women? It was like pulling teeth! Daisies the Florists, Molly Maid Cleaners. So few women out there doing their own thing under their own name.

Interesting that.

  1. In my business, as a distributor with The Utility Warehouse, there are a large percentage of authorised distributors who are women. They are very effective and extremely successful. Lets face it women are good networkers. They are generally self employed and trade under their own name so I don’t think they are necessarily shy, retiring and secretive.
It’s maybe that you were looking in the wrong places; there aren’t so many women builders or tilers (yet) and let’s be honest who is actually behind many successful men and businesses out there. So when you phone Joe Bloggs you should just ask to speak to Mrs Bloggs and see where it gets you!

    • Fair point well made – and I speak as someone who has met the lovely Mrs. Morrison! : )
