HMS Ark Royal heads home

Ship Finder app comes into its own

A cold and misty afternoon saw hundreds of people gathering along the north and south banks of the Tyne to welcome home the HMS Ark Royal. The sight of sailors saluting on the brig was an emotional one as the crowd around me talked about what the ship meant to them – memories of ship building, helicopters landing from the boats on the river banks and, in the middle of all the reminiscing, frantic phone calls being made to neighbours to ‘Look out of yer winders pet, she’s comin’ y’em.’

As she entered the port itself she let out two huge blasts on her horn and the river valley echoed to her call.

A stunning, stunning sight.
